Metropolitan Opera

Welcome to New York

Metropolitan Opera

New York is not only the largest city in the USA, but also the cultural and artistic center of the American east coast. Almost all the sights are located on the island of Manhattan, the city center of New York. The most famous buildings and sights are the Statue of Liberty (1886), Madison Square Garden, the Brooklyn Bridge and the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts near Central Park. Alongside the Vienna State Opera and La Scala in Milan, the Metropolitan Opera is one of the world's leading opera houses. Since its foundation on Broadway in 1883, the management has always been committed to engaging the world's most famous artists, conductors and singers: Enrico Caruso made his debut in 1903 and stayed until 1920, Gustav Mahler came to the Met in 1908, Arturo Toscanini became chief conductor in the same year, Puccini premiered two of his operas here and Maria Callas came to the Met for the first time in 1956. Plácido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti followed in 1968 - to name just the most famous artists. In 1966, the Metropolitan Opera Company moved into the new building in the “Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts”. Make your visit to an opera performance a truly exclusive and unforgettable experience. We will of course be happy to help you plan your individual opera trip.
